Are You a Person?

by AT on August 31, 2009

numbered-personDid you know the United Kingdom is a registered corporation? Did you know you are one of its employees? Did you know New Labour is a registered company that also trades as Alistair Darling MP Ltd? The courts, the police, even the House of Lords – all registered companies.

Even if you were aware of these oddities you may have dismissed them as yet another bureaucratic excess of no practical importance. But what if that’s not the case? What if you have been lied to, mislead and deceived about the nature of the society you live in and your “status” in that society?

For example, are you a person? Many people will simply answer yes to that question, after all it’s obvious isn’t it? Everyone is a person! However, the term “person” has a very different definition under the law than the meaning applied in common usage.

In a fascinating speech at the Lawful Rebellion Conference John Harris takes a look at the law and strips away the layers of deliberate complexity to reveal some surprising conclusions. Have a watch. It will certainly make you consider your words more carefully next time you are conversing with the state.
